UDs joins 2.4 billion people worldwide to commemorate the Commonwealth Day
Dschang,UDs/SIC-11-03-2019: The University of Dschang via the Commonwealth UDs club have been carrying out a series of activities over the week to commemorate the Commonwealth Day, slated for Monday 11th March 2019. The theme for 2019 is ‘A Connected Commonwealth’, which offers opportunities for the people, governments and institutions of this richly diverse family of nations to connect and work together at many levels through far-reaching and deep-rooted networks of friendship and goodwill.
This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the formation of the Commonwealth as it is configured today, with old ties and new links enabling co-operation towards social, political and economic development, which is both inclusive and sustainable.
Queen Elizabeth II, Head of the Commonwealth, has released a message to mark the occasion in which she says Commonwealth citizens can “look to the future with greater confidence and optimism as a result of the links that we share.” She goes on to say: “With enduring commitment through times of great change, successive generations have demonstrated that whilst the goodwill for which the Commonwealth is renowned may be intangible, its impact is very real.”
Throughout the week, hitherto the Commonwealth Day, series of activities were carried out, including a clean up campaign, a capacity building workshop on leadership on the 8th March 2019, a visit to Mia Mo’o orphanage on the 10th March and a sports encounter. Activities to mark the day include cultural activities and a conference on this year’s theme. Celebrating the Commonwealth day portrays UDs commitment to support commonwealth activities in its stance as one of the members of the Association of Commonwealth Universities./ MRZ
